Capstone Project

TREX

Problem

Wildfire fuel measurement is slow, labor-intensive, and inconsistent due to manual stick counting and terrain challenges. Human error and subjective assessments reduce data accuracy and delay decision-making.

Approach

The team developed over 50 prototypes using a human-centered design approach, iteratively testing and refining the system. They integrated sensors and a drive train on a zipline-mounted device controlled via a local app.

Solution

TREX automates fuel measurement by capturing high-resolution imagery and LiDAR data along a transect. Data is processed through a locally hosted VLM pipeline for efficient and standardized wildfire risk evaluation.
