Bio
Monika is an expert on the intersections of technology and social life, with experience in academic research, journalism, long-form writing, and information services. Her work explores how emerging media technologies—such as AI and data-driven systems—both shape and are shaped by social, cultural, and material dynamics.

At the University of Washington, she is based at the Tech Policy Lab and leads Society + Technology, a tri-campus initiative focused on the social dimensions of emerging technologies. She has taught courses in media studies, communication, and literary arts.

She’s an experienced public speaker, author, and community organizer. Her work has been supported by organizations including Art + Feminism, the European Journalism Centre, Hacks/Hackers, the Knight Foundation, Microsoft, Mozilla, the Network of the National Library of Medicine, OCLC, the Rotary Foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation, Hugo House, and Write Doe Bay. She has a doctorate in Communication and Science Studies from UC San Diego.
